The new BMW 2-Series Coupé celebrates its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England on 8 July 2021. This traditionrich motor sport get-together, headlined by spectacular sprints up the hill, provides the ideal stage for the debut appearance of the dynamic and compact newcomer. And the 2-Series Coupé will also be one of the new models presented by BMW at the IAA MOBILITY 2021 show taking place in Munich in September 2021. The market launch will then get underway at the beginning of 2022 with three model variants. Topping the range will be the all-wheel-drive BMW M240i xDrive Coupé from BMW M. This performance-focused model is powered by a 275 kW/374 hp six-cylinder in-line engine. Variants with four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines channelling their power to the road through the rear wheels will also available.

The new BMW 2-Series Coupé will be built at the BMW Group's San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico. Opened in 2019, the production facility – which also makes the new BMW 3-Series Sedan with combustion engine and plug-in hybrid drive system – stands out with its exceptionally efficient and sustainable manufacturing processes. The standout sporting character of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé is rooted in a vehicle concept whose every detail – from the dimensions and design, the weight distribution, body structure, powertrain and chassis engineering to the interior environment – has been rigorously optimised to deliver maximum driving pleasure. In their choice of drive concept and the composition of engine technology and chassis components for the compact model, the development engineers took their cues from particularly sporting BMW models in higher vehicle segments. For example, new technological features originally developed for the new BMW 4-Series Coupé have also been deployed in the compact two-door model in model-specific form. The premium carmaker also called on its many decades of experience in the integrated application of all the powertrain and chassis systems. Intensive tuning runs at the BMW Group's testing facilities, as well as at the Nürburgring's Nordschleife circuit and other race tracks, helped to give the new BMW 2-Series Coupé its sublime driving dynamics.

The new BMW 2-Series Coupé therefore builds on a long tradition of compact and extremely sporty cars which share a close connection with the number 2 in the model badge. With its compact dimensions, a powerful engine and sophisticated chassis technology, the BMW 1600 already caused a stir some 55 years ago. The 02 suffix attached to a model designation in reference to its two-door body remains an internationally recognised shorthand for the brand's fabled Sheer Driving Pleasure to this day. At is launch in 1973, the 125 kW/170 hp BMW 2002 turbo was the first series-produced European car to have its engine power boosted by means of turbocharging.

Driving pleasure in its modern guise arrived in the premium compact segment in 2004. As the only model in its class to offer rear-wheel drive, and featuring exceptionally sophisticated engine and chassis technology, the BMW 1-Series range became a byword for sporting prowess – a status further reinforced by the coupé variant that joined the range in 2007.

An undeniably unique design, exclusive new additions to the engine lineup and bespoke chassis tuning imbued the first generation of the BMW 2-Series Coupé presented in 2014 with its distinctive character. And now the new edition of the compact two-door model goes a step further still. Its standalone vehicle concept puts clear water between it and the BMW 1-Series models (based on an advanced front-wheeldrive architecture) and borrows extensively from the technology used in the BMW 3-Series and BMW 4-Series. As a result, the new BMW 2-Series Coupé occupies a defiantly niche position in both the brand's model portfolio and among its rivals.

Individual proportions, optimised aerodynamics

The exterior dimensions of the new compact sports car provide the ideal starting point for excellent driving dynamics. A vehicle length of 4,537 millimetres and width of 1,838 millimetres represent increases over the measurements for the predecessor model of 105 and 64 millimetres respectively. However, the new car stands 28 millimetres lower, with a vehicle height of 1,390 millimetres. Other factors in the powerful and athletic appearance of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé are its wheelbase, which is now 51 millimetres longer at 2,741 millimetres, and the wide tracks. Track widths of 1,575 millimetres (an increase of 54 millimetres) at the front axle and 1,587 millimetres (an increase of 31 millimetres) at the rear axle (BMW M240i xDrive Coupé: +63 millimetres at the front, +35 millimetres at the rear) are ideal for excellent cornering dynamics.

The new BMW 2-Series Coupé's boot offers load capacity of 390 litres. The 20-litre increase in primary capacity in its directly viewable area allows two 46-inch golf bags to be accommodated in the boot effortlessly. And longer items of luggage can also be stowed away comfortably when the standard 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear seat backrest is folded down. The height of the loading edge has been reduced by 35 millimetres compared to the predecessor model.

The concept for the new BMW 2-Series Coupé body also includes targeted measures for optimising its aerodynamic properties with a beneficial effect on both driving dynamics and efficiency. An active air flap control system for the BMW kidney grille – adjustable through ten stages according to need – and the lower intake in the front apron, plus air curtains, flush-fitting door handles, aerodynamically optimised lightalloy wheels and an almost completely sealed underbody, serve to channel the airflow effectively. Here, the contours of the stiffening ribs in the underbody have also been adjusted to the direction of the airflow. The BMW M240i xDrive Coupé also has turning vanes and splitters at the front of the underbody which deflect the air precisely as required to reduce lift. The drag coefficient (Cd) for the new BMW 220i Coupé and new BMW 220d Coupé with standard 17-inch light-alloy wheels is 0.26, which represents an improvement of 0.02 over the figure for the predecessor model when fitted with only 16-inch wheels.

Intelligent lightweight design optimises rigidity and weight

The weight-minimising design of the body and chassis is another factor in the agility and efficiency of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé. An intelligent mix of materials succeeds in minimising vehicle weight while also enhancing the body's rigidity and crash safety. The hotstamped steels and aluminium alloys used for the safety passenger cell are supplemented by multi-phase steels for extra reinforcement.

As in the new BMW 4-Series Coupé, die-cast aluminium spring struts and an engine side member made from extruded aluminium profiles are deployed to save weight in the front end of the car. Other advances over the outgoing model have been achieved through the aluminium construction of the bonnet and front side panels of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé. These measures alone account for a reduction in weight of around 9.6 kilograms.

A comprehensive passive safety concept maximises occupant protection in an extremely wide range of collisions and factors in the requirements of crash testing procedures in car markets around the world. The BMW Controller, gear selector lever, Start/Stop button, Driving Experience Control switch and numerous other function buttons are grouped within a modern-looking control panel in the centre console. The new design of the BMW kidney grille aligns closely with the performance-oriented character of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé. The grille features vertically arranged air flaps at its heart in place of the classical bars. These operate electrically and only open when the engine behind the scenes has an increased need for cooling air. The horizontal BMW kidney grille is bordered by a single-piece frame, which is finished in chrome as standard, painted in Cerium Grey on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé and painted in High-gloss Black when M High-gloss Shadow Line with extended features is specified. The horizontal cooling air flaps in the hexagonal lower intakes in the front apron are also adjusted according to need and help to cool the brakes as well. The Adaptive LED Headlights can be identified by goldcoloured accent trim and light guides for the daytime driving light and turn indicators that exude a particularly vivid sense of power. And the Adaptive LED Headlights are also available in optional M lights Shadow Line specification with darkened inlays.

Side view: crisp lines, surfaces with muscular visual appeal

A long bonnet, short overhangs and a set-back passenger compartment – whose rear section rests on powerfully flared wheel arches – give the new 2-Series Coupé proportions cut from the time-honoured BMW mould. Combined with a roofline that swoops down dynamically from the B-pillar, and the short boot lid culminating in a pronounced spoiler lip, this creates the agile three-box appearance characteristic of compact BMW coupés. The clean and reduced design language brings extra muscularity to the extended surfaces of the wheel arches. And the positioning of the forward-surging and horizontal BMW kidney grille also catches the eye clearly when the car is viewed from the side.

The precisely drawn shoulderline emerging from the headlights extends all the way along the flanks to the rear lights. The clarity of the line, like the striking glasshouse with its large glazed surfaces, brings to mind the BMW 1-Series Coupé from a few years ago. The side window graphic culminates at the rear in a classical interpretation of BMW's signature Hofmeister kink. A second character line positioned low down links the front and rear wheel arches. It teams up with the side skirt extensions to give the area around the doors a particularly light and compact appearance.

Powerful rear with striking light and shadow effects

Horizontally pronounced surfaces give the rear end of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé its structure. They produce an appealing interplay of light and shadow effects which enhances the visual power of the rear end. Like the compact headlights at the front of the car, the contours of the stylishly darkened rear lights – positioned at the outer extremes of the rear end – embody sporting prowess in concentrated form. Their surfaces are formed by light clusters with three-dimensional sculpting. This provides a particularly classy showcase for the LED technology used in all the light functions. The rear light bars illuminate uniformly to produce a new, downward-ending interpretation of the familiar L shape. They border the pentagonal brake light units at their upper edge and to the side. Horizontal LED light guides below the rear lights serve as turn indicators. The reversing and rear fog lights are likewise integrated into the rear lights, while the third brake light is positioned above the rear window.

A rear apron insert – finished in matt Black and with integral reflectors – reaches a long way up and underscores the sporting feel. The exhaust tailpipes on petrol-engined models come in a dual-branch arrangement. Extending out from the right- and left-hand edges of the rear apron, the tailpipes are circular on the BMW 220i Coupé and trapezoidal on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé.

Customers purchasing the new BMW 2-Series Coupé can choose from two non-metallic and six metallic exterior paint shades. A new addition to the range is the Thundernight metallic colour available exclusively for the sporty two-door model.

Distinctive accents enhance the feeling of dynamism: the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé and M Sport specification

Specific design features give the six-cylinder BMW M240i xDrive Coupé a visually expressive presence which clearly highlights its performance attributes. The surfaces bordering the lower air intake in the front apron display the U-shaped graphic typical of BMW M cars. A black spoiler lip rounds off the front apron at its lowest point to the road. The BMW kidney grille surround and side air intake trim come in Cerium Grey, as do the M-specific exterior mirror caps, the exhaust tailpipes and the model badges. Also part of standard specification for the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé are M High-gloss Shadow Line trim and 19-inch M light-alloy wheels. Like the rear apron inlay, its side skirts are also in High-gloss Black. An M-specific boot lid spoiler painted in body colour and a black diffuser between the exhaust tailpipes optimise the airflow at the rear of the car. Above the diffuser, a hexagonal design element reprises the contours of the lower air intake at the front end. Vertically arranged aero lips with integrated reflectors at the outer edges of the rear apron emphasise the wide and powerful stature of the BMW M model.

The M Sport specification available as an option for all other model variants also sends a clear message about the car's dynamic ability. It includes the powerfully structured front apron with large side air intakes, M High-gloss Shadow Line trim and 18-inch M light-alloy wheels. The side skirts and the lower section of the rear apron with integral diffuser are painted in Dark Shadow metallic.

Interior: the ideal place for intensive driving pleasure

The design of the interior centres on the richly engaging driving experience on offer in the new BMW 2-Series Coupé. The clear taper in the rear section of the roofline, the high centre console and the smoothly blending surface treatment of the instrument panel and door panels create a cocooning feel around the driver and front passenger. The Easy-Entry function slides the front seats forward in a controlled movement when the backrests are folded, making it easier for passengers to access the rear compartment. The contours and integral head restraints of the two rear seats give them an individual-seat character, allowing passengers in the rear to enjoy a sense of sporty driving pleasure as well.

Standard equipment includes a Sport leather steering wheel with newly designed multifunction buttons. The likewise standard sport seats for the driver and front passenger have surfaces in a black cloth/Sensatec combination. The new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé and cars in M Sport specification come as standard with Alcantara/Sensatec upholstery in Black with blue contrast stitching. Options include surfaces in Sensatec perforated in three colours. Vernasca leather upholstery is also available – in a choice of four colours if the standard sport seats are specified. And the optional M Sport seats can be ordered in two leather shades.

Dynamic lines bring structure to the door panels and rear trim sections. A vibrant design element – whose contours are further accentuated by contrast stitching in the optional equipment variants – connects the armrests with the upper section of the trim. The combination of triangular surfaces and diagonal lines in the exterior of the car is carried over into the interior here. A new design feature comes in the form of trapezoidal accent surfaces above the armrests in the doors. If the optional ambient lighting is specified, its perforated surfaces are stylishly backlit.

Also helping to create the feeling of quality and sporting flair on board are the standard interior trim strips in the Dark Graphite matt variant making its debut in the new BMW 2-Series Coupé. As an alternative, variants in Aluminium Mesh Effect and High-gloss Black are available as options. The interior trim strips in the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé and in cars with M Sport specification come in High-gloss Black as standard and Aluminium Tetragon as an option. In these cars, standard equipment also includes an M leather steering wheel, cushioned knee pads on the centre console, an M headliner in Anthracite, door sill finishers bearing the M logo, M pedals and an M driver footrest, M floor mats and M-specific displays in the instrument cluster.

Chassis technology and driving experience

From day one, the series production development process for the new BMW 2-Series Coupé was focused squarely on leading the way in the premium compact segment in terms of dynamic performance. Compact dimensions, intelligent lightweight design for the body and chassis, almost perfect 50 : 50 weight distribution and optimised aerodynamics create an ideal blueprint for a vehicle character majoring in sporting excellence. The agility, steering precision and cornering dynamics of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé are significantly improved over the predecessor model. Wider tracks, carefully adjusted wheel camber values and an up to 12 per cent increase in static torsional rigidity for the body all play a role here.

Another central element of the vehicle concept underpinning the new BMW 2-Series Coupé is power transfer to the rear wheels or – in the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé – via intelligent all-wheel drive with a noticeable rear-wheel bias. Both drivetrain variants involve harnessing the engine's power to deliver a classical form of driving pleasure straight out of the BMW playbook. The super-sporting character profile of this range-topping model also feeds off an overall package that uses the racing expertise of BMW M GmbH to enhance agility, precision and dynamic prowess. Indeed, the engine, eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, intelligent all-wheel drive and bespoke chassis technology (including M Sport differential) dovetail perfectly with one another.

In all model variants, exceptionally sophisticated chassis components originally designed for the BMW 3-Series and BMW 4-Series models ensure supreme driveability at all times. While the new BMW 2-Series Coupé clearly outstrips its predecessor in terms of performance, the comfort levels it offers in everyday use and over longer journeys remain at the same high level. In fact, when it comes to rolling comfort and acoustics, the new car can even claim significant improvements.

A two-joint spring strut front axle and a five-link rear axle with modelspecific design and set-up join forces in the new BMW 2-Series Coupé. The design principle on which the axles are based and the standard-fit lift-related dampers both contribute to precisely controllable handling in dynamic driving situations and a high level of long-distance comfort. M Sport suspension including variable sport steering can be specified as an option and also provides the basis for the model-specific suspension of the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé. The flagship 2-Series Coupé variant also comes as standard with an M Sport braking system, an M Sport differential and 19-inch M light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tyres. In addition, high-performance tyres and adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers are available as options.

The integrated application of all the powertrain and chassis systems ensures that the engine's performance characteristics are complemented by precisely controllable handling in every situation, intoxicating cornering dynamics, optimised traction in all weather and road conditions, and exceptionally well-resolved ride comfort. Added to which, fine-tuning measures optimise the car's steering behaviour and the build-up of lateral acceleration forces so that the flow of power to the rear wheels enhances sporty cornering and even enables smoothly controllable drifts.

Weight-minimised construction of the front and rear axle and the wheel bearings

The rigidity of the components used in the two-joint spring strut-front axle brings even more precise wheel location to the new BMW 2-Series Coupé. The new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé has additional struts supporting the front axle carriers on the side sills. A hydraulically damped tension strut mount minimises vibration and oscillation. Aluminium suspension arms and swivel bearings reduce unsprung mass.

In addition, the five-link-rear axle helps to ensure precise wheel location thanks to the exceptional stiffness of the subframe and suspension arms. The axle's dual elastic bearing also enhances ride comfort. The combination of sheet steel and aluminium components also helps reduce unsprung mass at the rear axle. And the introduction of a new generation of wheel bearings cuts weight by around 2.7 kilograms compared with the predecessor model. Added to which, the new wheel bearings boost the efficiency of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé by reducing their friction levels by up to 45 per cent.

Lift-related dampers with bespoke characteristics

The suspension technology fitted as standard on the new BMW 2-Series Coupé includes lift-related dampers. Depending on the spring travel, these provide extra damping to control body movement when driving over large bumps and inhibit excessive dive. The system reacts to minor imperfections in the road surface, meanwhile, with low damping forces that produce high levels of comfort. The extra damping contributes to excellent transient behaviour in corners, too.

At the front axle, an additional element that drops down into the inner sleeve of the damper cancels out body vibrations. The lift-related control at the rear axle employs an additional piston and a tapered inner tube to ensure optimum hydraulic damping even when carrying a heavy load. Lift-related damping is an active element of the suspension set-up and can be tuned specifically to optimise the balance between sportiness and comfort. The optional M Sport suspension brings firmer responses for the lift-related dampers and springs.

Adaptive M suspension spans an extremely wide spectrum between sportiness and comfort

The adaptive M suspension available as an option for the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé allows drivers the widest possible spread between sporty and comfort-oriented responses. Adaptive M suspension combines the characteristics of M Sport suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Continuously adjustable valves allow the damping force to be metered at each wheel individually and as a function of vehicle load. Switching between the various Driving Experience Control modes produces a clearly perceptible variation in the damping characteristics – from the well-balanced long-distance comfort of COMFORT mode through to the highly dynamic set-up activated in SPORT PLUS.

An extra mode can be selected using the Driving Experience Control switch on models with adaptive M suspension. In the ADAPTIVE setting, the steering, damping and accelerator responses along with the transmission's shift characteristics are automatically adjusted to suit the driving style. Navigation data can also be used to prepare the car in advance for an upcoming junction or bend.

Variable sport steering: increased agility in corners, greater ease of manoeuvring

The model-specific adaptation of the steering systems for the new BMW 2-Series Coupé makes them exceptionally precise. Electric Power Steering including Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance is fitted as standard. Variable sport steering is part of the M Sport suspension and adaptive M suspension set-ups. Its variable ratio adjusts according to the steering angle, allowing it to provide both assured directional stability and agile cornering response. Plus, parking, manoeuvring and turning off at low speeds require significantly less steering effort – and are therefore much easier.

The BMW 220i Coupé and BMW 220d Coupé models are fitted as standard with 17-inch light-alloy wheels. 18-inch M light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tyres are part of M Sport specification. The new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé leaves the factory on 19-inch M light-alloy wheels as standard, and these are likewise fitted with mixed-size tyres. Further light-alloy wheels in 18- and 19-inch sizes and high-performance tyres are included on the options list. The M Performance Parts range adds more options to the mix, with further light-alloy wheel variants in 18-, 19- and even 20-inch sizes all offered. A tyre pressure indicator covering each individual wheel allows the driver to bring up the values detected by sensors on the control display. It is included as standard on the new BMW 2-Series Coupé, whichever wheel/tyre combination the customer chooses.

M Sport braking system with model-specific adjustments, brake callipers painted in either blue or red

Powerful lightweight braking systems with a bespoke configuration also play a part in the car's precisely controllable performance. The optional M Sport brakes (standard on the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé) provide excellent braking performance and intuitive feel, whether negotiating city streets or pushing hard around a circuit. They feature a different hydraulic configuration including four-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear. The callipers bear the M logo and are painted blue, although customers can also specify a red painted finish.

The functions provided by the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system include not only anti-lock braking (ABS) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), but also a variety of stabilising functions and the drive-off assistant. The Performance Control function gives the car even more agile handling by varying the distribution of drive torque to the rear wheels according to the situation at hand. In order to optimise directional stability during heavy braking on surfaces offering differing levels of grip for the right-hand and left-hand wheels, a steering impulse is applied to help the driver correct the car's line. The functioning of the electromechanical parking brake is also integrated into the rear brake callipers by means of the DSC system.

M Sport differential fitted as standard on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé

The outstanding performance attributes of the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé stem from a carefully composed package of powertrain and chassis technology which also includes an M Sport differential as standard alongside the extremely powerful six-cylinder in-line engine and intelligent all-wheel drive. Its electronically controlled, fully variable locking function in the rear differential optimises traction and directional stability, as well as agility and cornering dynamics to particularly good effect.

The DSC system is used to limit rotational speed equalisation between the rear wheels, optimising the transfer of power to the road. This effectively counters any tendency to understeer when taking corners at speed. Power which cannot be transferred to the road by the unloaded wheel on the inside of the bend – as it is liable to slip – is deliberately shifted to the wheel on the outside of the bend, rather than applying the brakes to neutralise its effect. As a result, all of the engine's power is channelled into providing a sporty driving experience. The fully variable system can provide a locking effect of 0 to 100 per cent.

Distributing the torque to the wheels individually improves directional stability during dynamic lane changes. The increase in the amount of power that can be transferred to the road also allows the new BMW 2-Series Coupé to accelerate out of corners with eye-catching dynamism. The carefully calculated distribution of drive power endows the car with greater poise when negotiating a quick succession of bends. Here, the M Sport differential increases the potential for sending drive to the rear wheels; for example, the BMW xDrive system can also retain its rear-wheel bias in extremely dynamic driving situations. All of which dials up the intensity of the hallmark BMW driving pleasure available to customers in the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé an extra notch. Another advantage of the M Sport differential is improved traction when pulling away on surfaces with varying grip levels.

The two four-cylinder units powering the new BMW 220i Coupé and new BMW 220d Coupé respectively also represent a compelling proposition with their exceptional blend of efficiency and dynamism. Moreover, sending their engine power to the rear wheels generates driving pleasure of a magnitude beyond any other car in its class but for which BMW is renowned. With its rear-biased set-up, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system of the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé also delivers a driving experience characteristic of the brand – combined with exceptional traction, directional stability and cornering dynamics.

The latest generation of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and – in the BMW 220d Coupé – the use of 48V mild-hybrid technology provide instantaneous power delivery and minimise fuel consumption and emissions. Their advanced engine technology (which in the four-cylinder power unit powering the BMW 220i Coupé includes an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head for the first time) and sophisticated exhaust treatment system enable all model variants to meet the Euro 6d emission standard. All of the engines available for the new BMW 2-Series Coupé team up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. With its ability to change gear rapidly and additional functions such as Launch Control and Sprint Mode on hand, the result is a highly intense performance experience.

Formidable power: six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in the flagship BMW M240i xDrive Coupé

Power delivery of rare intensity marks out the engine in the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé. The flagship model in the 2-Series Coupé range is equipped with the most powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in the BMW engine portfolio. With maximum output of 275 kW/374 hp, the 3.0-litre unit develops 25 kW/34 hp more than the engine in its predecessor. Its peak torque of 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) is on tap across a broad rev range of 1,900 – 5,000 rpm.

Developed using the motor-racing expertise of BMW M GmbH, the engine features an aluminium crankcase with a closed-deck construction and a likewise alloy cylinder head. Internal engine efficiency is increased by weight-optimised pistons and con rods and a crankshaft made from forged steel. Power development and efficiency also benefit from the latest BMW M Twin Power Turbo technology. This comprises twin-scroll turbocharging with indirect charge air cooling integrated into the intake system, High Precision Injection petrol direct injection (which now works at maximum pressure of 350 bar), plus VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing for the intake and exhaust sides.

An extremely effective cooling system ensures ideal operating temperatures are maintained – both in everyday use and when a supersporty driving style is employed. A split-cooling valve makes it possible to temporarily shut off crankcase cooling, thereby optimising warm-up behaviour. With its full power mobilised, the six-cylinder in-line engine accelerates the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds. The standard M Sport exhaust system provides an authentic mouthpiece for the engine's spirited power delivery with its emotionally stirring soundtrack. Combined fuel consumption for the BMW M model in the WLTP test cycle is 8.8 – 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres (32.1 – 34.9 mpg imp), with CO2 emissions coming in at 200 -185 grams per kilometre.

BMW 220i Coupé with optimised four-cylinder petrol engine

As well as the latest version of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with twin-scroll turbocharging and High Precision Injection (which sends fuel into the combustion chambers at up to 350 bar), the four-cylinder petrol engine of the new BMW 220i Coupé also has a cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifold. Making its debut in the 135 kW/184 hp unit, this design enables particularly effective exhaust gas cooling, which helps to minimise emissions. The four-cylinder petrol engine also has a split-cooling system for the crankcase.

The 2.0-litre engine generates maximum torque of 300 Nm (221 lb-ft), enabling acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.5 seconds. The new BMW 220i Coupé returns average fuel consumption figures of 6.8 – 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres (41.5 – 44.8 mpg imp) with CO2 emissions of 155 – 144 grams per kilometre in the WLTP cycle.

In summer 2022 the new BMW 230i Coupé will be added to the range. This model variant will also be powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine with the exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head. This exceptionally powerful four-cylinder unit produces maximum output of 180 kW/245 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). It will also send its drive to the rear wheels. And the new BMW 230i Coupé can also be ordered with options including an M Sport differential to take the dynamic driving experience to another level still.

Four-cylinder diesel engine with two-stage turbocharging and mild-hybrid technology in the BMW 220d Coupé

An ongoing process of development sees the four-cylinder diesel engine in the new BMW 220d Coupé providing a clear upgrade over its predecessor in terms of power and efficiency. The 2.0-litre power unit develops maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). It now features two-stage turbocharging and further developed common rail direct injection. Added to which, mild-hybrid technology supports or eases the burden on the diesel engine, as the situation demands. To this end, a 48V starter generator takes the role of an electric drive system, providing an extra 8 kW/11 hp of power. This electric boost enhances dynamic response when accelerating off the line and putting in mid-range bursts of speed. The new BMW 220d Coupé sprints from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.9 seconds.

The mild-hybrid system allows the electric power recuperated via Brake Energy Regeneration and stored in an additional battery to be used extremely intensively. This power is used for the auxiliary electric drive system and to enable the electric consumers on board the new BMW 220d Coupé to work particularly efficiently. The power unit's combined fuel consumption and CO2 values in the WLTP test cycle are 5.1 – 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres (55.4 – 60.1 mpg imp) and 132 – 122 grams per kilometre.

Standard in all model variants of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé: eight-speed Steptronic transmission

The power generated by the engine at hand is channelled through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard in all the new BMW 2-Series Coupé model variants. The latest version of the automatic transmission stands out with its sharper shift characteristics, improved efficiency, remarkably fast gear changes and very smooth operation. In order to optimise the shift strategy for sporty performance and efficiency, the transmission's control unit is able to take into account data on route topography and the traffic situation supplied by the navigation system and driver assistance systems. This allows it to avoid unnecessary gear changes through a quick succession of corners and to shift down early when approaching a junction or vehicle travelling ahead in order to utilise the slowing effect of the engine's drag torque.

The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission fitted as standard in the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé and available for all other model variants as an option helps the driver to execute extremely dynamic manoeuvres. As well as gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, this transmission also brings a Launch Control function for when the driver is looking to power off the line with optimal traction and maximum dynamic flair. For quick bursts of speed while on the move, meanwhile, there is the Sprint function. Here, the transmission automatically shifts into the lowest usable gear when the driver pulls the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second. At the same time, all of the powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their sharpest sporting settings.

BMW xDrive: precisely controlled power distribution for optimal traction, exceptional agility and hallmark BMW driving pleasure

The intelligent all-wheel-drive system BMW xDrive in the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé increases traction, directional stability and agility. It uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case interlinked with the powertrain and chassis systems to distribute power between the front and rear wheels as required for the situation at hand. In this way, any tendency of the vehicle to oversteer or understeer is nipped in the bud.

The rear-wheel bias of BMW xDrive optimises both the efficiency and the dynamic properties of the compact BMW M model. In driving situations where all-wheel drive is not necessary, the power from the six-cylinder in-line engine is sent to the rear wheels alone. Interior and equipment

The exterior design of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé instantly announces its overtly sporting nature, and that same character can be immediately sensed in the interior, too. A low seating position in standard sport seats, dynamic lines running along the instrument panel and door trims, a driver-focused cockpit design and a Sport leather steering wheel – another standard feature – fuel anticipation of the exhilarating driving experience to come. The control display's positioning as an integral element of the new screen grouping, the rear-view mirror's ultra-slim frame and the flush-fitting overhead control unit all help to improve the view ahead, enhancing the feeling of space.

Even in standard specification, the unwavering focus on delivering engaging driving pleasure is plain to see. This is especially true of the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé with its undeniable sports car aura. The equipment lines offered provide a further indication of how sporting prowess lies at the heart of the overall concept behind this compact twodoor BMW. The new BMW 220i Coupé and BMW 220d Coupé are both available in M Sport trim as an alternative to standard specification, while the M Sport package Pro can be added on top. Customers will also be able to order model-specific retrofit items from the M Performance Parts range for their new BMW 2-Series Coupé from launch.

M Sport seats and M leather steering wheel for intense driving pleasure, electric seat adjustment enhances comfort. The list of options also includes a wide array of features for precisely tailoring the driving pleasure, comfort, functionality and individual style of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé to customers' preferences and needs. The standard sport seats for the driver and front passengers provide both excellent long-distance comfort and pronounced lateral support when powering through corners. Seat heating can be added as an option.

Electrically adjustable sport seats (including a memory function on the driver's side) are another option. Here, the seats' fore/aft position, tilt and height can be adjusted at the push of a button, along with the backrest width and angle. For supreme ease of use, a graphic appears on the control display to visualise the movement of the various seat elements as they are being adjusted. Also on the options list are M Sport seats with extremely pronounced contouring and integral head restraints. These likewise come with electrical adjustment, including for the height of the head restraints.

The standard Sport leather steering wheel comes with particularly highquality multifunction buttons in its latest version. An M leather steering wheel with an especially striking three-spoke design can be found on the options list (standard in the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé and with M Sport specification), as can steering wheel heating.

Windscreen with acoustic glazing and three-zone automatic climate control as standard, glass slide/tilt sunroof and ambient lighting as an option

The new BMW 2-Series Coupé is fitted as standard with acoustic glazing for the windscreen and a rain sensor with automatic headlight activation. Wiper arms with integral spray nozzles allow the washer fluid to be distributed in a very even manner at whatever speed the car is travelling. Electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors also form part of standard specification, while an automatic folding mechanism for the exterior mirrors and an automatically dimming rear-view mirror can be added as options.

Three-zone automatic climate control also features as standard, allowing independent control of the temperature and ventilation settings for the driver's side, the front passenger side and the rear compartment.

The new version of the optional glass slide/tilt sunroof has a transparent surface that is 80 millimetres longer than in the outgoing model and is nearly 20 per cent larger overall. The glass roof tilts up or slides open electrically.

The standard LED lighting for the cabin includes reading and interior lights in both the front and rear, as well as lighting for the glove compartment, the storage compartment under the centre armrest, the footwells, the mirrors in the sun visors and the boot, plus the courtesy lights in the doors. The optional ambient lighting provides atmospherically rich illumination of the interior with precision lighting for the map pockets and trim elements in the door panelling, the door openers, the footwells, the centre console and the storage compartment in front of the selector lever. The lighting's distribution, brightness and colour scheme can be configured in the iDrive menu. This option also includes the Dynamic interior light function, whose pulsating light signals indicate an incoming phone call or an open door when the engine is running.

A removable trailer tow hitch is also available as an option for the new BMW 2-Series Coupé, with a permissible trailer load of up to 1,600 kilograms for all model variants.

Bespoke communications and audio tech: Bluetooth and USB interfaces, Harman Kardon surround sound system

The new BMW 2-Series Coupé comes as standard with a Bluetooth interface and two USB ports, while the optional telephony with wireless charging enables inductive charging of compatible smartphones. The BMW Live Cockpit fitted as standard includes an audio system with six speakers and an output of 100 watts. Opting for the hi-fi speaker system (standard on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé) increases the number of sound sources to ten and the amplifier's output to 205 watts. And for those looking for the ultimate feast for the ears, there is the Harman Kardon surround sound system, complete with 16 speakers and a digital seven-channel amplifier delivering 464 watts of audio power.

Dynamic performance, as you like it: M Sport package Pro and M Performance Parts

The M Sport trim available for the new BMW 220i Coupé and BMW 220d Coupé incorporates bespoke design and equipment features that clearly accentuate the sense of driving pleasure – and the M Sport package Pro can be added on top. Comprising M Sport brakes, 19-inch M light-alloy wheels, M High-gloss Shadow Line with extended features, the M lights Shadow Line, a black front spoiler lip and a black M rear spoiler, this package delivers optimised driving dynamics and particularly striking looks. A sporty drive sound in the interior, the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, the hi-fi speaker system and M seat belts also increase levels of driving pleasure.

The M Performance Parts available for the new BMW 2-Series Coupé allow customers to give their car an extra sporting touch, as per their personal tastes. The retrofit items available as part of the Genuine BMW Accessory range include 20-inch M Performance forged light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design and M Performance brakes, as well as a front spoiler, side skirt attachments, exterior mirror caps, a rear diffuser, a rear spoiler and exhaust tailpipe finishers in carbon fibre. And customers can also bring additional sporting flair to the interior with options such as an M Performance steering wheel and interior trim panels in carbon fibre.

Driver assistance systems

The new BMW 2-Series Coupé enhances safety and comfort with a significantly expanded selection of driver assistance systems compared with the predecessor model. The automated assistance functions – which are either fitted as standard or available as options – are among the best on the market. They assist the driver or lighten their workload in a wide variety of driving situations and when parking.

The driver assistance systems deployed in the new BMW 2-Series Coupé process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings, to warn of potential hazards and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs. Existing functions can be improved or expanded by means of Remote Software Upgrades, and customers can also use Functions on Demand to select and import a range of functions at a later stage (availability depends on the hardware fitted in the vehicle and the market conditions).

Front-collision warning, Speed Limit Info and Lane Departure Warning as standard

The BMW 2-Series Coupé is fitted as standard with front-collision warning. This system includes Collision Warning with braking function, which is able to react to both moving and stationary vehicles ahead, and pedestrian and cyclist warning with braking function. Speed Limit Info with no-overtaking indicator is another feature fitted as standard.

Also to be found on the standard equipment list is Lane Departure Warning with lane return, which can be used when travelling at 70 to 210 km/h (44 – 130 mph). This alerts the driver with steering wheel vibrations if they are unintentionally drifting out of their lane and helps them guide the car back onto the correct course with a steering input. The system now analyses the road conditions at hand even more precisely. On extremely narrow roads, the course correction assistance is suppressed so that if a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction, the driver can easily move onto the side of the road.

Targeted increase in comfort and safety: Driving Assistant and Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function

The functions included in the optional Driving Assistant include Rear Collision Prevention and rear crossing traffic warning, which reduces the danger of a collision when reversing towards roads that are difficult to see into. Lane Change Warning increases safety when performing overtaking manoeuvres on multi-lane roads. It alerts the driver to vehicles which are within a critical distance on the adjacent lane or approaching quickly from the rear. The warning takes the form of an illuminating signal in the exterior mirror.

The standard-fitted Cruise Control with brake function helps make driving over longer distances more relaxing. It maintains the desired speed set by the driver (in a range between 30 km/h [19 mph] and the top speed of the model at hand), while automatically adjusting to a comfortable speed in bends.

And the optional Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function offers even more extensive assistance by using sensor data from cameras and radar to not only maintain the preferred speed but also automatically keep a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead – with a choice of four proximity settings. This system works when driving at speeds of 30 – 160 km/h (19 – 99 mph) and is capable of braking the vehicle to a standstill, if necessary, and even setting off again automatically after short pauses lasting up to 30 seconds.

The standard and optional cruise control systems both include a manual Speed Limit Assist function, which allows the driver to import the speed limit registered by the Speed Limit Info system as the new set speed at the push of a button.

Making its BMW 2-Series Coupé debut: the BMW Head-Up Display

The BMW Head-Up Display – available for the BMW 2-Series Coupé for the first time as an optional extra – helps the car to provide focused and safe driving pleasure. It projects driving-related information (in the form of graphics) directly into the driver's field of vision on the windscreen, where it can be assimilated without the need to divert their eyes from the road. The latest generation of the system boasts a very large projection area and full-colour graphics. The information projected by the BMW Head-Up Display includes the car's speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from the assistance systems, detailed route guidance and turn instructions, and telephone and entertainment lists.

On models fitted with Active Cruise Control, the BMW Head-Up Display also features distance warning, which flashes up a graphic icon to alert the driver when they get closer to the vehicle in front than the minimum distance.

Help, as desired, with parking and manoeuvring: Reversing Assist Camera, Reversing Assistant, Parking Assistant Plus

Drivers of the new BMW 2-Series Coupé can also benefit from effective assistance when parking and manoeuvring, for example from the optional Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at the front and rear. The optional Parking Assistant includes Active Park Distance Control (PDC), which uses visual and acoustic alerts and automatic brake inputs to help avoid collisions with obstacles to the sides and rear of the vehicle. The Parking Assistant also includes a Reversing Assist Camera integrated into the BMW badge on the tailgate.

Added to which, the latest version of the Parking Assistant offers an even wider range of uses. It helps the driver to select and use parking spaces either parallel or perpendicular to the road. And it can also be used for pulling out of spaces parallel to the road. As well as the necessary steering inputs, the Parking Assistant carries out the acceleration, braking and gear changes required for the manoeuvre.

The Reversing Assistant is also an element of the Parking Assistant. It offers the highly convenient option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-storey car parks or entrances to courtyards, over a distance of up to 50 metres. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedal and monitor the vehicle's surroundings.

The functions contained in the optional Parking Assistant Plus provide an excellent overview. Surround View including Top View, Panorama View and 3D View help to create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings, which is shown from various angles in the control display. Meanwhile, the Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

The BMW Drive Recorder available on cars with Parking Assistant Plus uses the driver assistance systems' cameras to record video images all around the vehicle, so these can be stored and later either played back on the control display when the vehicle is stationary or exported via the USB interface. It therefore allows the driver to record videos up to 40 seconds in length while driving through spectacular countryside or performing eye-catching driving manoeuvres, for example. In the event of a collision, up to 20 seconds of video taken both before and after the impact (i.e. 40 seconds in total) are stored.

Display and operating system, connectivity

Both driver and passengers will benefit from the enhanced options for intuitive operation and the innovative digital services heralded by the inclusion of BMW Operating System 7 in the new BMW 2-Series Coupé as standard. Individually configurable display content and intelligent connectivity underpin multimodal and remarkably seamless interaction between driver and vehicle. Drivers can take their pick of control interface for the situation at hand: control display touchscreen, proven BMW Controller, multifunction buttons on the steering wheel or voice control. The new BMW 2-Series Coupé also gives customers on-board access to a range of highly advanced digital services, including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW Digital Key, Real Time Traffic Information including hazard alert, Connected Music and Remote Software Upgrades.

The standard-fitted BMW Live Cockpit comprises the iDrive operating system with 8.8-inch control display touchscreen and a black panel instrument cluster centred around a 5.1-inch colour display, plus a multimedia system, a Bluetooth interface and two USB ports for data transfer. A built-in SIM card with 4G LTE connectivity and the likewise standard Connected Package enable the use of digital services such as BMW TeleServices, intelligent emergency call and Remote Services via the My BMW App. Upgrading to the BMW Live Cockpit Plus option adds a navigation system and a WiFi interface to the feature list, along with a Touch Controller whose touch-sensitive surface can be used to enter characters.

The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional features a fully digital screen grouping. It includes a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and a 10.25-inch control display. The fully digital instrument display in the cockpit provides enough room to accommodate an excerpt from the navigation map, media content or status indicators for the driver assistance systems.

Fast, accurate, informative: the BMW Maps navigation system

The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system boasts significantly enhanced performance and excellent accuracy along with a simplified method of destination entry. The new-generation navigation system offers extremely fast route calculation carried out dynamically and based on precise real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals. The arrival time is calculated using an anticipatory method which factors in the usual traffic levels along the entire route. Drivers can enter any word when searching for their chosen destination. The search results are sorted by relevance with a high level of precision. Alternatively, the destination can be entered simply by saying it. Points of interest (POIs) along the route are described in detail, with reviews, opening times and photos all included.

BMW Maps also uses Connected Parking to provide assistance when searching for a parking space close to the destination. When the driver selects their destination in the navigation system, they receive an indication of the parking situation at the destination for their estimated time of arrival. Shortly before arriving, the driver is given information on the nearest multi-storey car park as well as proposed routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination. The familiar On-Street Parking Information and ParkNow services have been intelligently incorporated into the functionality of BMW Maps.

Smartphone linking and integration of third-party services

BMW Live Cockpit Plus – like BMW Live Cockpit Professional – comprises optimised smartphone integration, e.g. via Apple CarPlay, allowing customers to access an array of digital services such as the digital voice-controlled assistant Siri, various map apps, music streaming services like Apple Music and the messaging service WhatsApp. The wireless WiFi connection between the smartphone and vehicle enables the operating system in question to be integrated directly into the car's display and operating system. All the key information from the apps made available there can be viewed both in the control display and – in a cleverly presented way – in the instrument cluster or optional Head-Up Display.

The BMW Group has extended the reach of seamless connectivity in its vehicles with the addition of another customer-centric service. Android Auto™ provides a simple, safe way to use smartphone functions such as music, media and messaging apps during a journey.
